The Corio Hotel

The Corio Hotel located in Railway Terrace Goolwa, has been an integral feature of the landscape of Goolwa since its construction in 1858. Named after the paddle steamer “SS Corio”, which sank in 1857 on the Murray River, the National Trust listed hotel has traded continuously, an interesting feature of the hotel is the Great Yankee Doodle Tobacco ceiling posters. The posters are reproductions of a painting call The Spirit of 76 by Archibald M Willard. The original painting, titled Yankee Doodle, was a humorous depiction of the Fourth of July celebrations, but was changed from humorous to patriotic for the Centennial Exposition of 1876 in Philadelphia USA. Coloured reproductions, like the ones on the ceiling of the Corio, were sold prior to the centennial under their new title “The Spirit of 76.
